Online Encyclopedia By Larry Sanger

With an interest in philosophy from a young age, Larry Sanger has spent years understanding the source of knowledge. Since Sanger was interested in the internet, he has been involved in various online encyclopedia projects. Sanger is one of the founders of Wikipedia and later became the founder of Citizendium.

Larry Sanger has the aim of bringing the encyclopedia to integrate with the internet, to make it accessible to anyone, anywhere and anytime.

Early life

Larry Sanger was born on July 16, 1968 in Bellevue, Washington. Sanger and his family moved to Anchorage, Alaska, when he was seven years old. Sanger is a superior student in the class where he develops his interest in philosophy.

After graduating from high school in 1986 and entering Reed College, majoring in philosophy, Sanger continued to deepen his understanding of the source of knowledge. When the internet began to become popular, Sanger became interested in and realized the benefits and wikis for creating an online encyclopedia.

Sanger established an initial effort with a list server as a discussion forum for students and tutors to meet through internet intermediaries outside of teaching and learning activities at universities. Sanger was the moderator of the discussion on philosophy.

In 1991, Sanger received a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy from Reed College, and in 1995, he received a Master of Arts from Ohio State University. He continued his studies and received a Doctor of Philosophy from Ohio State University in 2000.

From 1998 to 2000, he ran a website called “Sanger’s Review of Y2K News Reports” intended for Y2K observers. Sanger married in 2001 and has two children.

Online Encyclopedia

In 2000, Larry Sanger was hired as the editor-in-chief at Nupedia, a licensed web-based encyclopedia of free content. Nupedia was founded by Jimmy Wales and funded by Bomis. Because Nupedia’s articles were written by experts, Sanger was frustrated by his slow progress. In January 2001, Sanger proposed a wiki created to spur the development of articles, and the result of this proposal was Wikipedia, which was officially launched on January 15, 2001.

Wikipedia was first intended as a wiki intended for the public to write articles that will then be included in Nupedia.

But the popularity of Wikipedia cannot be dammed, and in just a few days after its launch, Wikipedia expanded beyond Nupedia. This surprised Sanger and Wales. Due to the fact that Wikipedia allows the public to participate, Sanger changes many of Nupedia’s provisions to be in line with Wikipedia

Wikipedia continues to grow, but Sanger often disagrees with Wales. Because of the continuing protracted conflict and lack of support from Wales, Sanger resigned from the company.

Sanger was the only editor paid by Wikipedia from January 15, 2001 to March 1, 2002. Sanger resigned from Nupedia and Wikipedia on March 1, 2002. Sanger’s reason for ending his participation in Wikipedia and Nupedia was because he could not do the job as a volunteer part time. Nupedia ended in 2003, shortly after Wikipedia’s second birthday.
